Installation

This guide covers how to install the Palo Alto Networks MCP Server.

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.10 or later
  • Palo Alto Networks NGFW with XML API access
  • API key with appropriate permissions

Installation Steps

Using pip

pip install .
uv pip install .

Development Installation

For development purposes, you can install the package in editable mode:

# Using pip
pip install -e .

# Using uv
uv pip install -e .

Virtual Environment

It's recommended to use a virtual environment for installation:

# Create a virtual environment
python -m venv venv

# Activate the virtual environment
# On Windows
venv\Scripts\activate
# On macOS/Linux
source venv/bin/activate

# Install the package
pip install .

Configuration

After installation, you'll need to configure the server by setting the required environment variables. See the Configuration Guide for details.

Verifying Installation

You can verify that the installation was successful by running:

python -m palo_alto_mcp --version

This should display the version of the Palo Alto Networks MCP Server.

Installing for Use with Windsurf

If you're using the server with Windsurf, you'll need to install it as an MCP server:

mcp install palo_alto_mcp

This will make the server available to Windsurf as a command-based MCP server.

Dependencies

The main dependencies include:

  • modelcontextprotocol: The MCP Python SDK
  • httpx: For making asynchronous HTTP requests
  • pydantic-settings: For configuration management
